The Philadelphia Pastel Society will sponsor a two-day workshop “Creating a Narrative: Figure in an Urban Setting" by master pastel artist Karen Israel on May 7th and 8th, 2025, at the Community Arts Center in Wallingford, PA. Whether she is exploring landscape, figure or still life, her passion for design and creating a narrative is evident in her work.

Karen Israel asks “Do you sometimes find yourself creating a story in your head while people (or animal) watching? When painting a visual narrative, we share our emotional truths about what inspires us, and what brings us joy or sorrow. We hope to involve the viewer and encourage them to bring their own experiences to what you have painted. This is a genre full of possibilities and challenges.”

In this workshop, students will explore how to be less reliant on their photographic references, how to interpret the values in their references, and how to create a dynamic design to enhance their visual narrative. All of this will add excitement and movement to your work.

Karen is a Master Circle member of IAPS, a Master Pastelist member of PSA, and a Signature member of PSWC. Karen conducts many teaching demonstrations and workshops throughout the United States, and she has served as juror for many national competitions. She was the Juror of Selection for our 2024 PPS Members Exhibition at the Henry Gallery.
